REVIEW FROM ULTIMATE GLOBES STAFF: One of the first things we noticed when reviewing the Diplomat globe is how stately it appears. The stand does not overpower the view of the world globe, as you will see with other floor styles. It is evident that the stand is handcrafted in the USA by the quality and sturdy nature as well as the care given during the stain and finish process of the handcrafted wood, this is not your typical mass-produced particle board stand from Asia.
As you notice from the pictures, this is a cradle mounted globe which allows the globe ball to spin east to west or west to east smoothly. Also, it can be turned like a steering wheel, round and round, allowing you to see all parts of the globe. This mounting method should not be confused with a full swing meridian you can push forward and back. The purpose is to provide the support needed for the world globe to move freely, and the cradle mount is the best approach.
The numbered brass meridian is also hand made and etched with the lat/long degree markings. The meridian rests in small notches on the inside of the stand and a small roller located within the center post. Although the globe comes with a built-in light kit that serves to backlight the globe ball from within, we have had several corporate customers choose to order the Diplomat globe without the illumination feature as the electric access was not convenient. If you have this need, contact us, and we will be happy to place a custom order without this feature.
There is much to be said about the map used, but we will keep it just to the main points. It is the most detailed production globe on the market with over 28,000 points of interest, named places, etc. Most 16 inch globes max out at around 4,500 labeled locations, so it is substantially more.
It is a political map showing the country and political boundaries with individual color shadings. It is pretty easy to read given the size, and the backlight does help to enhance some of the text and colors when on. The map is added to a large acrylic sphere in strips with small overlap by hand, and there are only a couple of employees that handle this level of craftsmanship. Once applied, it can take several days to cure once adding the finish. The map color is available in blue or antique and we can order either way for you.
IN OUR OPINION: This is a one of a kind globe, and it is tough to find a world globe this size. Because production is limited, it is a fairly find, so you do get something extraordinary. Ultimate Globes sells this item to both private residences and corporate clients. With its large size, it is vital to make sure it fits the space you are looking to fill. The globe ball is right at 32 inches, so your door or window size depending on how you will bring it in, will need to allow for this. Most corporate offices have 36-inch door widths, which will be fine. The stand, although about 40 inches wide, can easily be placed on its side without the globe and brought through a door. If your budget and space allow the Diplomat makes a great addition!
